Sandals Antigua – the perfect Honeymoon

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to head off to the Caribbean and to visit not just one but two stunning Sandals Resorts, staying at the worlds most romantic resort – Sandals Grande Antigua, before the short flight over to the NEW Sandals Barbados.

travel-by-lesley-mapNow as a “travel agent, I would say that I am quite well travelled, especially with almost 30 years in the industry including 10 years as an Overseas Resort Representative but I have totally fallen in love with the Sandals concept – it really is luxury all-included and since Sandals were the first to offer All Inclusive in the Caribbean they really have been getting better with age and are now the leading company for luxury all-inclusive hotels and just to remind you, Sandals Resorts are purely for couples, over the age of 18 years old.

I am very lucky to be able to visit these beautiful destinations so that I can then personally recommend them to you, be it for a honeymoon, destination wedding or a wonderful holiday for just two people in love!

I love my job!

So, first stop was the Sandals Grande Antigua

Sandals Grande Antigua

Sandals Grand Antigua has been voted the “World’s Most Romantic Resort” year after year, it stretches along the islands best and most famous beach, Dickenson Bay with its soft white sand and gentle crystal clear warm waters.

All of the Sandals Resorts offer all-inclusive all of the time and we literally mean luxury all inclusive; all of the food, drinks and facilities are of the highest level, the bars serve premium brand spirits such as Bombay Sapphire, Smirnoff Vodka and Baileys and as for dining well you can indulge in steak, lobster and sushi at no extra cost, this included… and so much more!

During the day the hardest decision you have to make is pool or beach!! I preferred the main pool in the Mediterranean Village as this is the largest zero-entry pool in the Eastern Caribbean and just steps away from the beach and with a large swim-up bar right in the middle. Around the pool are large comfortable sun beds with even some in the water so you can just dip your toes in to cool down or if you prefer there is shade in the form of lovely private cabanas compete with lush day beds – the perfect settings for soaking up some of the hot Caribbean sun.

Sandals Grande Antigua is spread over two unique areas, the all-suite 6 star Mediterranean Village and the tropical beachfront Caribbean Grove, although it is a big resort, space is a key factor to this resort and you will feel you are in an exclusive, very luxurious, village as opposed to a hotel, if I am honest I preferred the Caribbean Grove, I think its because there are lovely colourful cottages dotted throughout the tropical gardens including some stunning beachfront rooms, it definitely seems to have a more laid back feel to it.

Cocktails that night were at the Sun-downers bar which is in the Caribbean Grove, it really is the perfect place to watch the sunset over the ocean with a delicious cocktail in your hand, but be quick the sun doesn’t hang around!

Which Room?

Deciding which room to book can be very confusing after all Sandals are renowned for their rather long room types however there are many different rooms to fit all tastes and budgets, so let me simplify it a bit for you, there are really only three room types, Deluxe, Club and Butler, then it just comes down to their configuration and their location – but don’t worry if you are still confused I can help you

I really liked the Caribbean Beachfront Grande Luxe Walkout Club Level Room, the decor was lovely and it was located just steps from the beach on the ground floor with stunning views of Dickenson Bay from a private patio and with a private pool just a few steps away.  All of the suites feature a romantic four-poster, king-size bed, flat screen TV and being a Club room you have 24 hour room service, a full in-room bar that is replenished daily with premium spirits and wine, VIP check-in Club lounge and concierge service.

Delicious Dishes

When it came to food I think we tried as many of the 11 restaurants as we could in the short time we were there, we dined in Marios, the Italian restaurant the first evening with its fantastic antipasti buffet and delicious pastas and Barefoot by the Sea the second night, which literally is what it says; here you can kick off  your heels and enjoy feeling the sand on your feet with the sound of the waves in the distance as you dine on fresh seafood, I enjoyed the surf & turf complete with lobster and steak!  We can definitely recommend grabbing yourself a coffee, cake or delicious ice-cream from Cafe de Paris.

We also enjoyed a delicious pizza from Bella Napoli and the fantastic hot dog stand which is situated by the main pool, is great for a snack when you just don’t want to drag yourself away from the pool!

eleanors-restaurant--v3921983-313For breakfast, if you are staying in a club or butler room then why not order room service, the main buffet restaurant is a Bayside where you can choose from fresh waffles and pancakes to omelettes made to order or the fine dining restaurant Eleanors, right on the seafront, here you can even order steak and eggs for breakfast!

Both evenings we ended up in the English pub, the Drunken Duck. This is the entertainment hot-spot in the evening, we took part in some reggae dancing and on the second night karaoke, that is as wild as it gets here, after all this resort is made for romance.

Candlelit dinners for two on the beach, private dinning on suite balconies, Champagne under the stars and cuddling up in front of one of the many fire-pits after dark are what this resort does best at night time.

During the day if you fancy leaving the comfort of your sunbed then why not take part in some of the complimentary land and water sports, some of the group decided to try their hand at sailing whilst I decided to go off on the dive boat on one of their daily snorkelling trips to a nearby reef.   If you want to see more of the island then head over to the Island Routes desk

I have tried and tested this resort and I have to admit it really is the worlds most romantic resort
